Natural remedies for dry scalp

Just because your scalp isn’t visible (in most cases, that is) doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of it. Dryness is among the most common skin issues that affect the scalp – one which, if left unaddressed, can easily become an annoying problem. Fortunately, treating dry scalp is easy with the right home remedies.

Anyone who has had to spend an entire day with an itchy, flaky, dry scalp knows it’s anything but a minor concern. It may not be a serious health issue, but the itch can be very bothersome and uncomfortable. And because the scalp is dry, it tends to break and wound easily when scratched too hard.

The flakes are an added concern. They fall everywhere every time you scratch your head, particularly onto your shoulders, and become a visible – and embarrassing – reminder that your scalp is dry. Incidentally, these symptoms are very similar to that of dandruff, but the two conditions are different from each other. While a dry scalp happens because of a lack of moisture, dandruff happens because of too much oil. Needless to say, a remedy for dandruff may not work on dry scalp and vice versa.

Once you have confirmed that the itch you feel is, in fact, because of dry scalp, you can try out the following remedies:

Olive and lavender

  • ½ cup of warm olive oil
  • 5 drops of lavender essential oil

Combine the two ingredients and apply onto your scalp. Leave the mixture on for an hour before rinsing it off using warm water. You can repeat this twice a week until you feel improvements in your scalp. Afterward, you can keep your scalp moisturized by applying the mixture once a month.

Aloe vera

You will need aloe vera gel. Just massage the gel onto your scalp and leave on for an hour. You can take the gel off of your hair by rinsing with warm water. This remedy may be applied once a day.

Honey

  • 2 drops of tea tree oil
  • ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup of honey

In a container, mix the ingredients. Massage onto your scalp for 15 minutes and leave on for at least an hour, after which time you can rinse it off with warm water. You can apply this remedy once a week until you feel sufficient improvements in your scalp.

Oatmeal

  • 12 tbsp. of oatmeal
  • 6 cups of water
  • 5 drops of rosemary oil
  • 5 drops of lavender oil

Let the oatmeal simmer in water for an hour, strain, and add lavender and rosemary oils. Give the mixture time to cool fully. Apply to your scalp and leave on for 10 minutes before you rinse it off with warm water. You can apply this remedy once a week until your scalp improves.

Coconut

  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 5 drops of almond oil
  • 5 drops of olive oil
  • 2 tbsp. of flour

Combine the ingredients and apply the resulting mixture onto your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse it out. You can use this remedy once a week until your scalp improves.

Dry scalp and washing your hair

Prevention is almost always better than cure. What many people forget is that the scalp is also part of the skin. The things that make your skin dry can do the same to your scalp. That said, washing your hair too much, especially using products with harsh ingredients, will strip both your hair and your scalp of the natural oils necessary for them to stay healthy and moisturized. That said, washing your hair once or twice a week is recommended if you have dry scalp. (Related: Is your shampoo harming your health?)
