Part of the way your body keeps itself healthy is by maintaining balanced pH levels, which is one mechanism to ward off disease. And one safe and inexpensive thing you can take to help the process along is simple baking soda.
Also known as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda taken internally has long been known to help the body balance pH levels in the bloodstream. A 1924 publication called “Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Medical Uses” talks all about how baking soda helps to protect against colds and influenza – and there is no reason to believe that the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) would respond to it any differently.
Dr. Volney S. Cheney recalls in the booklet how he had many clinical successes administering baking soda to his cold and flu patients.
“In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the ‘flu’ with the U.S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely anyone who had been thoroughly alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease,” Cheney wrote.
“[A]nd those who did contract it, if alkalinized early, would invariably have mild attacks.”
After observing how helpful it was in his own practice, Cheney further wrote that he continued to use baking soda to treat all cases of cold, influenza and LaGripe “by first giving generous doses of bicarbonate of soda, and in many, many instances within 36 hours the symptoms would have entirely abated.”
As for the flu, Cheney found that people who took baking soda were protected while nearly everyone else around them who did not fell ill.
Interestingly, Cheney used quotation marks around the words “cold” and “flu” in his report, suggesting that he did not necessarily believe these to be the diseases that most of the world has been led to believe they are.
Since covid is a type of coronavirus just like the common cold, baking soda more than likely works just as well to keep symptoms at bay.
Several years back, we reported about how baking soda mixed with lemon juice is also highly effective as a remedy for gout.
Mixing two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice with a teaspoon of baking soda can provide quick relief for the condition, as the concoction alkalizes urine and neutralizes uric acid.
Whenever the body is in a state of acidity for any reason – acidity causes disease, just to be clear – baking soda can be taken to help neutralize it with its alkalizing properties.
“Health problems, disease and sickness typically abound when your body is overly acidic so it is important to keep it within a healthy pH range,” one of our writers reported at the time.
There are many other things baking soda can be used for as well, including as a natural cleaning agency, an itch remedy for bug bites and poison ivy, a treatment for candida imbalances that result in yeast infections, and even as a cleansing agent for the face and skin.
The original 1925 recommended dosages of baking soda from the Arm & Hammer Company for colds and influenza are as follows:
• Day 1: Take six doses of 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in glass of cool water at roughly two-hour intervals
• Day 2: Take four doses of 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in glass of cool water at same intervals
• Day 3: Take two doses of 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in glass of cool water morning and evening, followed by 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in glass of cool water each morning until cold symptoms have subsided
